Better Late Than Never

It took me almost a year to get around to watching Academy Award winning, "Searching for Sugarman", but that's no where near as long as it took Sixto Rodriguez to be found.

File:Searching-for-sugar-man--poster.jpg"Searching for Sugarman" is a documentary about singer and songwriter, Sixto Rodriguez.  You've probably never heard of him.  Most people haven't as his career was only two forgotten albums in the 1970's.  Unless you lived in South Africa.  In which case, his albums were like your manifesto.

I don't want to give away too much of his story, because a big part of the fun of the documentary is uncovering the mystery of Rodriguez and gaining an understand of the effect of his music on others and his own personal development.  In the same scope it also touches upon why Bob Dylan became so popular at the time and Rodriguez was forgotten.  Does it have something to do with America not being ready to accept a Mexican blue-collar worker/folk singer?  Maybe.  The world was a different place then.

I was enchanted with his story, his person and his music.  His lyrics are meaningful, thought-provoking and poetic.  I think this is a perfect time for people to revisit Rodriguez as the present-day music scene is often little more than fluff and we could probably benefit from some deeper lyricism.

"Searching for Sugarman" is currently on Netflix.  If you're ever trolling Netflix for something to watch, be sure to check this one out.  Soooo worth it.
